Group of Young Professionals Present 2012 Juneteenth Arts & Music

Mississippi Humanities Council, Young Professionals Alliance of Greater Jackson, Good As Gold Video Production, the Law Offices of John S. Williams, LLC and the CW.

?Juneteenth is celebrated in cities across this country, yet Jackson doesn?t have a flagship or staple event to commemorate this important period in our history,? shared Jay Bogan, one of the event organizers and CEO of Jb Entertainment Group. ?Myself along with a few other young professionals came together to change that. We aren?t the type of individuals who just talk about what we would like to see happen here in Jackson, we try and provide a solution as well.?

Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration of the end of African slavery in the United States. Juneteenth celebrations originated in Galveston, Texas in 1865 when Union troops arrived to enforce the covenants of the Emancipation Proclamation that declared all slaves were to be freed in revolting states. Upon notice of their freedom, albeit two and half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued, the former slaves held community festivals and discussions to support their effort to realize the liberties of their freedoms through voting, education, and community welfare.

For more information about? sponsorship opportunities and vendor space, call 601-965-0337. Visit the 2012 Juneteenth Arts & Music event page on Facebook to learn more about the event.

Tips about Cruising | Travel and Leisure Blog

Every one has to cruise from one place to one more for a variety of reasons. another person has to go for business needs and some other might be traveling for fun. No make any difference what is the purpose to travel, there are few important items which should be kept in mind while preparing yourself for a quest.

First of all you need to make yourself at ease for traveling. Select the acceptable mode of conveyance which suits your demands and budget. Traveling in a public transport is most suitable and economical option. This not only saves funds but also gives you the independence to look around alternatively of concentrating on driving own car.

Secondly, verify the destination and traveling time. The luggage you are going to hold depends upon how long you are heading to cruise and how long you are heading to stay at the destination. It is always advised that one should travel light. It saves you from tension and stress of taking care of the luggage.

Third most important thing to remember is that you should wear some easy clothing. Do not wear formal suiting with official boots, as it will not allow you to sit at ease. It is better to wear some jeans along with a T-shirt and sandals. Such light gown will keep you fresh throughout the journey.

The prevailing security situation and fraudulent activities dictate that you should not belief any stranger during your quest. This is forth very imperative thing to keep in mind. Do not accept any eatables from a stranger. It is better to keep your own eatables and water bottle with you or you can buy it yourself from a well reputed store.

Last but not the least; while traveling must keep something to prove your identity. It will be really helpful.

Zimbabwe's president tells ANC to stop human rights, torture probe ordered by S. African court

HARARE, Zimbabwe - Zimbabwe's president said Friday he wants South Africa's ruling African National Congress to block an investigation in South Africa into alleged violence and atrocities by loyalists of his party.

President Robert Mugabe, speaking at a convention of southern African liberation movements in Harare, called the probe ordered by a South African court a `'racist assault" by embittered Zimbabwean and South African whites.

In May, a South African judge ordered his country's prosecutors to investigate alleged human rights abuses and torture in Zimbabwe in a case filed by a human rights group and Zimbabwean exiles. Those who brought the case, both whites and blacks, say they have documented abuses and envision a trial in South Africa.

Mugabe urged South African leaders to `'apply every means at their disposal" to prevent the case souring relations between the two countries that fought a common struggle to end white rule.

He said whites in southern Africa, including white Judge Hans Fabricius who made the probe ruling, are trying to makes excuses for their defeat by the forces of African liberation. He called the judge `'a boer," a pejorative term for whites, and said Fabricius has no jurisdiction in Zimbabwe and does not understand the way international law works.

The ruling came at the instigation of those `'still in our midst yearning for the old flags" of Rhodesia, as Zimbabwe was known before independence in 1980, and apartheid-era South Africa, Mugabe insisted.

He told representatives of the liberation groups of the ANC, Angola, Mozambique, Namibia, Tanzania and Zimbabwe that Africa has come under renewed attack from former colonizers determined to replace revolutionary parties with `'malleable stooges."

His party is not going to relinquish power without fighting to defend its role in achieving independence, Mugabe said.

Mugabe, 88, has been in power since independence from Britain. He was forced by regional leaders to form a coalition government with the former opposition leader, Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai , after violent and disputed elections in 2008.

Mugabe has been nominated as the sole candidate for his party in elections he has called for this year to end the troubled three-year coalition. He has not groomed a successor to take over the fractious party.

He acknowledged Friday that his party lost votes in strongholds in the 2008 polls and said that some of his lawmakers are now afraid to contest a new poll against Tsvangirai's Movement for Democratic Change. But the party could still rule permanently with its traditional support, he said.

`'Parties don't retire, its persons who retire. We cannot say we have stayed too long in government so that we should give others a chance to rule," he said.

In South Africa, the judge's ruling is likely to be tied up in appeals for some time before any probe starts.

Which Social Networks Are Right For Your Business? | Ker-ching ...

The social media cloud is a burgeoning one, expanding at a steadfast rate with the launch of new platforms and a series of complicated algorithms, all designed to increase your social engagement with existing and prospective customers. As a business owner, you have your fingers tied up in too many pies ? some get baked right, others not so much. So, when your email announces the launch of yet another social media platform, it?s okay to get flummoxed.

Here?s some food for thought ? you DO NOT need every social media platform for promoting your business, but you must be willing to spend time on the ones you choose. Before determining the best social media platforms for your business, answer this short questionnaire:

  • Do you sell products or services?
  • Is your business local or national/international?
  • Is it an online business or a brick and mortar store?
  • What demographic segment are you targeting?
  • Are your clients? internet-savvy?
  • Is it a B2C or a B2B business?
  • Are you a one person operation or do you have a marketing department?

We?ll provide answers to these questions when dissecting the most important social media platforms for 2012 and how you can use them to get better sales, more clients, and greater visibility.

Facebook ? The unbeatable Big Daddy of social media, Facebook has over 700 million users worldwide. It brings in the maximum percentage of referral traffic when compared to channels like LinkedIn, Twitter, and StumbleUpon.

It is also among the most versatile social channels, catering to all demographic segments. Whatever be your answer to the social questionnaire above, Facebook can be used to market all kinds of businesses ? online, local, global, mom and pop stores, home services, and so much more.

What can you use Facebook for? Here are some ideas ?

  • Announcing a sale event or a special deal for Facebook fans.
  • Include updates about your business.
  • Engage and communicate with fans.
  • Getting feedback on products and services.

Twitter ? Twitter may not be as ubiquitous as Facebook but the platform certainly provides its share of benefits to local businesses, especially those in the food industry, entertainment, and real estate.

By finding and following Twitter users in your area, you can connect with them instantly and spread word about your business, increasing foot fall to your store and networking with your followers.

Pinterest ? Although infantile compared to Facebook and Twitter, Pinterest has experienced rapid growth, making it one of the top websites for referral traffic. It has surged ahead of LinkedIn and Google+!

Pinterest has a mainly female audience and the channel relies on visual appeal. This is a must use social platform for businesses like:

  • Home restoration, furniture, and furnishings
  • Interior design and architecture
  • Wedding photography and videography
  • Bakeries
  • Food blogs
  • Handmade crafts

LinkedIn ? LinkedIn is a professional network that is ideal for business to business interaction. It does not require frequent status updates and information sharing, instead it gives businesses an opportunity to connect to their preferred target segment easily.

Join business specific groups on LinkedIn and participate in discussions led by members. This helps in building trust and aids in your networking efforts.

There are many industry specific social media platforms as well, although we recommend starting out with the ones that are most relevant to your business. Once you get a handle on these and start seeing positive results, move on to experimenting with other platforms.

Google Maps for Android getting offline access

Google Maps offline

Google today at a small event in San Francisco announced that it's taking Google Maps offline. That's right, no more will you be beholden to your data connection. Or if traveling abroad (or on a subway, for instance), you'll be able to kill data altogether and still find your way around. This, ladies and germs, is a big deal. What's more is that it's not just macro-level mapping. You'll be able to zoom all the way down into street view, sans data. You can't have it just yet, but Google says it's coming soon enough.

Google also showed off a backpack-type Street View rig -- powered by Android, if you'll believe it -- that's taken us down to street level in places cars can't go. Pretty slick.

And then there's 3D modeling in Google Earth. Google walked us through how it does things, making them better all the time. Its modeling has taken a big leap forward with the use of airplanes and oblique mapping, with computers doing some serious number crunching to make things impossibly smooth. It'll be coming to both Android and iOS devices in ridiculous resolution.

Harper lifts Nats with first career walk-off hit

Associated Press Sports

updated 11:54 p.m. ET June 5, 2012

WASHINGTON (AP) - You might think 19-year-old Bryce Harper would savor the moment after his first game-winning hit with two outs to give his team an extra-inning win.

Instead, after lifting the Washington Nationals to a 7-6 win against the New York Mets in 12 innings Tuesday night, Harper was upset with his line in the box score.

"I'm happy to get the W, of course. I'm happy to get that walk-off hit, but I don't like going 2 for 7," Harper said. "I don't like striking out twice in one game, either."

He then said the game-winner would mitigate his disappointment.

"To get that moment at the end, that wipes everything away," Harper said.

Harper's single ended a back-and-forth game that saw the Mets rally from a 3-0 early deficit to take leads in the top of the eighth, 10th and 12th innings - only to have the Nationals tie the game in the bottom of the frame each time.

Scott Hairston hit a solo homer in the top of the 12th to give New York a 6-5 lead, but the Nationals rallied when Michael Morse led off with his second double of the game. Ian Desmond followed with another double for his third RBI.

Reliever Elvin Ramirez (0-1) walked two batters to load the bases, and a fielder's choice by Xavier Nady left the bases loaded with two outs for Harper, who lined an 0-2 pitch to left field. The ball fell just in front of a diving Vinny Rottino.

"He's a man-child," Morse said of Harper. "This guy's unbelievable. He's really learning this game. Every day, I think he's taking something in. ... When he plays like he plays, it's fun to watch and it's good to have him on our side."

The Nationals are alone atop the National League East, a game ahead of Miami - which lost to Atlanta - and 1 1/2 games ahead of the Mets.

Both managers emptied their bullpens as the game wore on. Ramirez, the Mets' sixth pitcher, was making his second major league appearance. Ross Detwiler (4-3) pitched the final two innings as the Nationals' eighth.

"It would have been very easy for this team, for the hitters, to just say, `OK, we'll just go get them tomorrow,"' Detwiler said. "But we weathered the storm, we came back out there and fought."

Hairston also gave the Mets the lead in the 10th when he led off with a single and later scored on a wild pitch by Henry Rodriguez - Rodriguez's ninth in 21 innings this season. The Nationals tied it in the bottom of the inning, thanks to two errors by shortstop Jordany Valdespin - including a grounder by Desmond that bounced off his glove, allowing Ryan Zimmerman to score - and a wild pitch by Bobby Parnell.

The Mets fell behind 3-0 after five innings and started their comeback with solo home runs by David Wright and Valdespin in the sixth. Andres Torres hit a two-run double in the eighth to give New York a 4-3 lead.

Desmond tied the game at 4 with a run-scoring single in the eighth to set up extra innings.

Valdespin led off the sixth with a pinch-hit home run into the Nationals' bullpen in right field. It was the rookie's second pinch-hit homer this season. Wright added another solo homer with two outs, barely clearing the wall in left-center field. It was Wright's 736th career run scored, setting a Mets franchise record.

"The toughest part is the way we fought back," Mets manager Terry Collins said. "You're down three. We fight back. We get the lead. We lose the lead, get the lead, lose the lead, we get the lead and then we lose the game. That's very tough. The guys played very well."

According to the Nationals, Harper is the first teenager to have a game-ending hit since Gary Sheffield did it for the Brewers on Sept. 9, 1988.

"I don't think of him as a 19-year-old kid, but that's exactly what he is," Detwiler said. "He's going to be around for a long time, so it's awesome to see him learn and really grow as a player right now. You know he's going to be in the same position he's in now in 10, 15 years. It's pretty cool to see the beginning of it."

NOTES: New York RHP Jon Rauch has "debris" in his right elbow, according to manager Terry Collins. He'll miss the three games in Washington, but will be available for Friday's game against the Yankees, Collins said. ... The Mets activated RHP Miguel Batista (lower back strain) from the 15-day DL and placed RHP Ramon Ramirez (strained right hamstring) on the 15-day DL. Ramirez injured the hamstring running in from the bullpen to join in the celebration of Johan Santana's no-hitter on Friday, Collins said. The Mets also designated right-handed pitcher Jack Egbert for assignment. ... Washington RHP Brad Lidge (sports hernia) made his first rehab appearance for Class A Potomac Monday and expects to have two more on Wednesday and Friday.

Tiger is back _ at least for now

DUBLIN, Ohio (AP) ? Tiger Woods needed only two words to explain where the Memorial fits in on his road back from wherever he was to wherever he is going.

"I won," he said.

When trying to chart his progress, golf becomes a lot like watching tennis.

He wins at Sherwood, and then can't shake Robert Rock in Abu Dhabi. Phil Mickelson blows him away at Pebble Beach, and then Woods shoots a career-best final round of 62 to put a scare into Rory McIlroy. He withdraws from Doral with a sore Achilles tendon, and then wins by five at Bay Hill. He has the worst three-tournament stretch of his career, and then goes through a week at Muirfield Village where he hardly misses a shot.

He's back. He's finished. He's back. And on it goes.

"I'm sure by Tuesday I'll be retired and done," Woods said Sunday. "And then by the time I tee it up at the U.S. Open, it might be something different."

He was smiling at his own exaggeration, though there was a weariness to his tone that became even more pronounced when he concluded, "But I'll let you guys figure it out."

His remarkable rally at the Memorial makes the temptation greater than ever to proclaim that he has turned the corner and is picking up speed.

Woods said he hit just about every shot exactly how he wanted to, with the exception of his second shot on the 10th that he pulled slightly while trying to play a fade. It found a bunker and led to bogey. He missed only one fairway, and that was only by a few inches into the first cut of rough.

"I had it all today," Woods said. "Whatever club I wanted to hit, I could hit. That was fun to have it when I needed it."

Equally impressive was his score, which ultimately is what matters.

Not only did Woods overcome a four-shot deficit going into the final round, he was two shots behind with four holes to play as he posed in the fairway urging ? begging ? his 3-iron into the par-5 15th hole to carry beyond the false front of the green. It did, and he two-putted for birdie.

Woods figured if he could make one more birdie over the closing stretch, it might be enough for him to get into a playoff. Minutes later, he was praying for par when his 8-iron bounced over the green at the par-3 16th into a horrible spot. The ball was nestled in the rough, and the path 50 feet to the hole looked impossible. Too short, and it would turn down a slope and leave a difficult two-putt bogey. Too strong, and it would race past the cup and into the water.

With a full swing and a flop shot, the ball rode the crown of a ridge with just the right speed and dropped in for birdie not even he saw coming.

"It was one of the hardest ones I've pulled off," Woods said when asked to rank it among his best shots, which is a long list. "That was a pretty sweet shot."

He made one last birdie for good measure, a 9-iron into the 18th green that was played by a guy who looked as though he had won here before. It caught the ridge at the back of the green and rolled down to just inside 10 feet, giving him a 5-under 67 and a two-shot win.

It was his fifth win at Muirfield Village, the fifth golf course on which he has won at least five times. And it was the 73rd win of his PGA Tour career, tying him with Jack Nicklaus, the tournament host who was there, as always, to greet Woods when he came off the 18th green.

"He had to rub it in my face here, didn't he?" Nicklaus later said with a laugh.

Nicklaus was gushing over the flop shot that Woods holed on the 16th, and it truly was magic.

"I don't think under the circumstances I've ever seen a better shot," Nicklaus said.

The last time Woods won the Memorial was in 2009, when he also rallied from a four-shot deficit on the final day with a 65. It was his second win of the year, and the U.S. Open was two weeks away at Bethpage Black, where Woods had won wire-to-wire seven years earlier. Woods had 14 majors, as he does now.

"I suspect No. 15 will come for Tiger Woods in about two weeks," Nicklaus said at the trophy presentation. "If he drives the ball this way, and plays this way, I'm sure it will. And if not, it will surprise me greatly."

That year was full of so many surprises.

Woods won every tournament he played before the majors, and failed to win any of them. By the end of the year, his problems were off the golf course and he hasn't seriously challenged in the final hour of another major since then.

He won at Bay Hill, and then had his worst performance ever at the Masters as a pro when he tied for 40th.

Woods never broke par the last time the U.S. Open was played at The Olympic Club in 1998, though he was in the middle of changing his swing. He played the golf course last Tuesday and found it to be difficult, which it is. It is short by U.S. Open standards, though it plays long.

If nothing else, Olympic served as the perfect tuneup for Muirfield Village.

"Last week I did some good things, good work at home, and really got comfortable with the things that Sean (Foley) and I have been working on the last few tournaments and months," Woods said. "As soon as they felt comfortable, I was good to go. And when I went out and played Olympic, I hit the ball well there. I said, 'Hey, that's as good a prep as any for this event if I can hit the ball well there.'

"I just basically carried that into this event and hit it great all week."

Does this make him a failure if he doesn't win the U.S. Open? Is he done?

Woods talked about his game being good in spurts at other tournaments, though it was clear ? at least by how he hit the ball ? that he had his fastball all week. The process is to put good rounds together. Maybe the next step is putting good tournaments together.

In tennis terms, this would be a good time for a changeover. It's best to wait until the end of the year ? or at least until August, the end of the majors ? to figure out where Woods stands.

Libratone Live

The growing number of speakers armed with AirPlay, Apple's Wi-Fi-based audio streaming feature, share a mildly disturbing lack of variety in the design department. Most feature black cloth and metallic accents, like the Bowers & Wilkins Zeppelin Air ($599.95, 4 stars), and have very few buttons. While the extremely expensive Libratone Live (starts at $699.95 direct) is possibly the most button-deprived of the bunch, it brings variety in the form of an Italian cashmere wool speaker grille offered in five different colors. There's some minor distortion on deep bass tracks at top volumes, but the system offers generally high-quality audio performance. With no remote and almost no onboard controls, however, make no mistake: design is the first and foremost priority here.

Design
The vertical, cashmere wool-laden exterior of the Libratone Live comes in black (of course), beige, or gray for $699.95, or 'blood orange' or 'lime green' for $799.95. Some will say that the cloth and chrome monolith is stunning. Some will say it looks like a cat-scratching post. I like the way the Libratone Live looks, but wonder why it has a handle if it isn't really designed to be portable?it has no rechargeable battery to play off of. The lack of a remote doesn't bother me?your streaming iOS device acts as its own remote?but the lack of any real controls other than a power switch on the rear lower panel is annoying. All standard controls?from volume and muting to track navigation?are nowhere to be found on the speaker and must be controlled on your iOS device.

The only button, aside from Power, is adorned with the Libratone logo?a bird silhouette?and situated on the front panel of the speaker. It's used to establish a connection with Wi-Fi networks. There's a 3.5mm aux input just above the power switch, but no 3.5mm cable is provided, which is a weird omission for this price range. The power cable looks cool though?a cloth cable cover makes it seem more like part of the design and less like something that needs to be tucked away and hidden.

Getting set up with your Wi-Fi network is a short process, and a quick start guide walks you through it. Basically, you press the button with the bird logo on it and wait for it to blink yellow, then search for the speaker to show up as an option on your device's list of available Wi-Fi networks, and the rest is simple.

The range of Airplay tends to be around 30-45 feet, and within this range we had no drop-out issues at all while streaming. Beyond this range, the drop out can happen rather quickly, but this is true of most Airplay options.

Performance
Delivering a combined output of 150 watts, the Libratone Live's dual 25-watt tweeters and midrange drivers work seamlessly with the 50-watt bass driver within the wooden, cashmere-covered housing. Audiophiles won't be thrilled by the audible use of digital signal processing, which kicks in at higher volumes to help prevent or limit distortion.

Despite delivering a beautiful, clear midrange with articulate, resonant bass on a song with challenging low frequency content, like the Knife's "Silent Shout," the Live and its signal processing can't quite keep the distortion away at top volume. If you don't listen to songs with really deep bass, or you do, but don't really blast your music, you should be in good shape. Electronic music and hip-hop lovers, however, are hereby warned that at maximum volume, you may encounter some distortion. And, it should be noted that, maximum volume, while quite loud, is not ear-splittingly intolerable, particularly in a larger setting, so this is a real possibility.

Bill Callahan's stoic baritone on Apocalypse sounds excellent?through the Libratone Live?a nice deep resonance paired with crystal clear highs. The guitar work and percussion on that record also stand out for their overall clarity, as do the percussion and strings on John Adams' modern classical piece, "The Chairman Dances." The smooth low frequency response of the five-inch bass driver paired with clear mids and highs from the three-inch midrange drivers and one-inch ribbon-based tweeters really provides a sense of fullness to the piece?no section seems upstaged by another, the percussion and the strings get equal representation, which is not often the case, especially on systems that boost the bass response significantly.

The overall sonic performance of the Libratone Live is quite pleasing, just not at top volume, where signal processing and occasional distortion mar the clarity of the mix. If you're looking for a design piece that happens to output high quality audio, you have a few options in the AirPlay realm. The most obvious is the aforementioned Zeppelin Air, but another is the sonically superb Klipsch Gallery G-17 Air ($549.99, 4 stars). Both of those systems, as well as the Libratone Live, will definitely add a bit of sleek design flourish to any room.

If it's really just wireless audio you crave, and the visual design is less of a priority, our current Editors' Choice is the Bluetooth-based JBL OnBeat Xtreme ($499.95, 4.5 stars). At a lower (but still high) price, it keeps up with the best of the AirPlay crop, and Bluetooth tends to offer a slightly more reliable, less interrupted stream than AirPlay. If AirPlay really is a must, but your budget doesn't allow for the Libratone Live or its top-of-the-line competitors, the Audyssey Audio Dock Air ($399.99, 3.5 stars), while not perfect, offers reasonable quality at a far more affordable price.

Perhaps you're not an audiophile or even a devoted music lover. Perhaps you just want to be told that the Libratone Live, which you have fallen in love with visually, is worth its price before you plunk down $700. It's pretty hard to justify that price based on the audio performance alone, which is good, but not really in the $700-realm. But hey, you love the cashmere look, the audio is still very solid, and you have some money to spend?what's stopping you?

How Important are Regular Dental Check-Ups?

It has always been said that ? in order to enjoy good dental health that is free from serious dental problems ? one has to regularly visit the dentist and go for regular check-ups. It is recommended that the visits to the dentist are scheduled every six months, to ensure that good oral health is achieved and maintained, and so that dental problems can be diagnosed before these dental issues can even have the chance to progress into something more serious.

However, are regular dental check-ups really that important? Is it not enough for all of us to just brush our teeth on a regular basis ? and just forgo the twice a year dental visits?

The answer is ?YES? ? regular dental check-ups are very important in ensuring that our dental health is well taken care of. Of course, proper tooth brushing techniques done on a regular basis are essential parts of good oral health; as well the regular use of dental floss in making sure that the teeth and gum surfaces are free from debris is also important in maintaining good dental health.

Eating a healthy, balanced diet is also something that we can all do to get the vitamins and minerals needed to aid a good dental health status.

However, we can only do so much regarding the care of our dental health, and we all need the expertise of a professional ? a dentist ? to check our teeth and overall dental health status on a regular basis. Dentists have the expertise and knowledge to check on even the smallest areas of our teeth and the whole oral cavity, to ensure that there are no dental problems present. Dentists also have the capability to diagnose the earliest signs of dental problems and devise a treatment plan that will ensure that these dental concerns are not given the chance to develop into conditions that are more complicated.

Hence, one should know that regular dental check-ups coupled with proper oral hygiene and healthy diet, provide a problem free and healthy dental condition. Neglecting any of these aspects, can only result in incomplete dental care and thus, paving the path for future dental complications.

So the next time you question the importance of going for regular visits to the dentist, just think of the possibility that you may already have small dental problems that are just waiting to be discovered ? not by yourself, but by a dentist?s trained, professional eyes!

LONDON (AP) ? Elton John sang "I'm Still Standing," Stevie Wonder crooned "Isn't She Lovely," and Paul McCartney sent "All My Loving" as musical royalty celebrated Queen Elizabeth II's 60-year reign with a concert outside Buckingham Palace on Monday. But the joy was tempered by news that the queen's husband, Prince Philip, had been hospitalized with a bladder infection.

Palace officials said the prince, who will turn 91 on Saturday, was taken to the King Edward VII Hospital in London from Windsor Castle on Monday as a precaution and will remain under observation for a few days.

As the Diamond Jubilee show ended, Prince Charles took the stage and encouraged concertgoers to make some noise for his father. The crowd responded with a roar and chants of "Philip."

The heir to the throne paid tribute to his mother, addressing her as "Your Majesty ? Mummy" and leading the crowd in three cheers for the monarch.

Despite Philip's illness, many members of the royal family, including Charles, his wife Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, and Princes William and Harry sat in a royal box to watch the show, performed on a specially erected stage outside the palace.

The queen was cheered as she arrived partway through the show, wearing a gold lame cocktail dress under a dark cape. It was decided before Philip's illness that she would watch only part of the concert.

The queen is not a noted pop music fan, and appeared to be wearing yellow ear plugs as she observed the concert.

Some 12,000 contest winners watched the show from an enclosed area, while a huge crowd stretched down the Mall, the wide boulevard leading up to the palace.

The lineup featured a full hand of knights ? McCartney, John, Cliff Richard and Tom Jones, all "Sirs" ? along with Dame Shirley Bassey and younger artists including JLS and Kylie Minogue.

The show opened in a blaze of sound and color, as a scarlet-clad military band joined Robbie Williams onstage for his hit "Let Me Entertain You." Black Eyed Peas star Will.i.am performed "I Gotta Feeling" with songstress Jessie J.

In true something-for-everyone mode, performances ranged from pianist Lang Lang playing Gershwin to American soprano Renee Fleming to 64-year-old Grace Jones hula-hooping her way through "Slave to the Rhythm."

Performers from around the world sang a special jubilee song written by Andrew Lloyd Webber and "Take That'''s Gary Barlow.

It was the veteran entertainers who went down best. The crowd roared along to Cliff Richard's "Congratulations," and cheered Bassey singing ? fittingly ? "Diamonds are Forever." Prince Harry could be seen singing along ? "Why, why why?" ? as Tom Jones belted out "Delilah," while Prince William and his wife Catherine joined in on John's "Crocodile Rock."

Ska band Madness performed 80s hit "Our House" on the palace roof, changing the lyrics to "Our house, in the middle of one's street."

The queen may not like to rock'n'roll but she has plenty of fans among rock's elite.

Before the show, Elton John paid tribute to the monarch's constancy.

"She's not trendy, she doesn't follow any fads," John told the BBC. "She's stoic, she's brilliant, she's wise, she's funny, and we're all really happy to be here."

McCartney closed the concert playing "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da" on a Union Jack guitar before the queen took the stage with her family ? but without Philip, who until Monday had been her constant companion throughout the jubilee celebrations.

He had joined the queen and senior royals on the River Thames in cold and blustery weather Sunday for a pageant in honor of Elizabeth's 60 years on the throne

The prince, who married then-Princess Elizabeth in 1947, has cut back on official engagements in recent years but still maintains a busy schedule. He spent four nights in the hospital over Christmas after suffering chest pains and underwent a successful coronary stent procedure to clear a blocked artery.

The palace said Philip was "understandably, disappointed about missing this evening's Diamond Jubilee Concert," as well as a St. Paul's Cathedral service and other jubilee events planned for Tuesday.

"I'm very sorry he's going to miss the concert because he's really part of the celebration," said Canadian tourist Marielle Demorsce. "He's part of the 60 years, he's put in a lot of work with the queen to appear all over the world and we love him too so very much."

The jubilee was being marked around the world in members of the 54-nation Commonwealth of former British colonies.

At the end of the concert, the queen lit the last in a chain of more than 4,200 commemorative beacons that have been set alight in Britain and abroad.

One beacon was lit in Kenya at the Treetops Hotel, where Elizabeth was informed of her father's death in 1952, making her the queen.

Although not everyone has embraced the jubilee ? anti-monarchists have protested, and some 2 million Britons used the four-day holiday weekend to leave the country ? many said it gave them a sense of pride.

"Sixty years on the throne is a remarkable achievement," said 47-year-old Dean Caston, who joined the crowds outside the palace on Monday. "People knock Britain and how depressed we are, but this weekend you can see we have got a lot to be proud of."

32 years after attack, Pakistani woman gets nose

THATHA PIRA, Pakistan (AP) ? After six years of abuse, Allah Rakhi was walking out of her marriage when her husband struck again. Snatching a knife, he sliced off her nose. "You're no longer beautiful!" he shouted.

He then slashed at her foot ? brutal punishment for leaving the house without his permission.

"A woman is only a woman inside the home, outside she's a whore!" he yelled at Rakhi as she lay bleeding on the dusty street just outside her home.

That was 32 years ago.

All that time, Rakhi hid her disfigured face under a veil. Then in March, a surgeon took up her case. He cut flesh from her ribs and fashioned it into a new nose, transforming her life.

While the details of every case of violence against Pakistani woman differ, many are based on a concept of "family honor." Women can be targeted for suspicion of an affair, wishing to divorce or dressing inappropriately. Hundreds women are murdered each year because of mere suspicions.

The nose is considered the symbol of family honor in Pakistan ? explaining why a woman's nose is often the target of spousal abuse. A popular plea from parents to children is "Please take care of our nose," which means, "don't do anything that tarnishes the reputation of the family."

Rooted in tribal ideas that a woman's chastity is the property of the man, honor killings are practiced in much of the Arab world and South Asia. They have also been carried out by immigrants from those regions to the West.

Pakistani courts have a history of letting off offenders or giving them only light punishment, assuming the cases get to trial at all.

Rakhi's husband, for example, served just 10 months in jail before being released in exchange for a commitment to pay her medical bills. He never did.

Accurate statistics on the extent of honor crimes are hard to come by, because many cases go unreported or are settled out of court under pressure from the families of the victim and the attacker.

The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan said that in 2011, at least 943 women were murdered, nine had their noses cut off, 98 were tortured, 47 set on fire and 38 attacked with acid.

Efforts to introduce stronger laws to increase punishments for violence against women have been blocked by an Islamist political party which publicly supports the Taliban in neighboring Afghanistan. The party, Jamiat Ulema Islam, is a member of the ruling coalition.

The lower houses of parliament passed the bill, but the JUI is preventing its passage through the upper house.

"We will never let it happen," said JUI senator Maulana Ghafoor Haideri, who said the bill was an attempt to "Westernize" Pakistan. "It will ruin our family institutions," he said.

Shad Begum, a Pakistani right activists who received the U.S. International Woman of Courage award from first lady Michelle Obama this year, said firmer laws and better enforcement are the only solution to violence against woman.

"Our leaders need to take a firm stand," she said. "If a man makes a woman a victim, or makes an 'example out of her' as he believes, our courts should also make an example out of him."

Rakhi was attacked when she was 19, after being married at 13. Despite being illegal, child marriages remain common in parts of Pakistan.

Following the attack, she worked to support herself and her daughter, painting flowers on pots in a factory and buying and selling clothes in markets across the country, all the time hidden behind a veil.

"I died every moment," Rakhi said in her three-room mud and brick house in a village hidden among the wheat fields of Pakistan's Punjab province.

Rakhi's husband divorced her soon after he was released from prison, she said.

In a bizarre twist, the 51-year-old woman now lives again under the same roof as him ? something she claims as a "victory," but also perhaps points to her poverty and lack of alternatives.

Rakhi's son persuaded her to return home, anxious for her to have a more comfortable life.

On a recent visit, the husband scooted out of the house as Rakhi welcomed a reporter, and he did not made himself available for comment.

She said she never stopped hoping for a new nose, but doctors were unwilling to operate because she suffers from hepatitis C, a liver condition that can complicate surgery.

It was her daughter who gave her the chance. She was working in the capital, Islamabad, at an institute that provides training for woman recovering from having acid thrown on their faces. She introduced Rakhi to the Acid Survivors Foundation, which put her in touch with a surgeon.

Dr. Hamid Hasan took her case for free. Asked why he would take the chance, he answered, "Her pleas. Her tears."

At a follow up appointment last month, Hasan touched the scars where the stitches once were on her nose and forehead.

Rakhi winced slightly, and smiled as the surgeon took his hands away.

Hasan said her positive attitude was important for the other operations she must undergo in the coming months.

"Thank God I did not commit suicide," Rakhi said. "Life is a blessing!"

(AP) ? Naomi Judd's new limited-run SiriusXM radio talk show has no safety net and even the country star says with a laugh she isn't sure that's a great idea.

"If you've been at a press conference, you know I've said things I haven't thought of ? whoa," Judd said. "That's why they asked me. And there's no 5-second delay. I'm wandering the woods without a map."

Judd hopes "Think Twice," which starts its six-week run of hour-long Friday morning episodes June 8, will be a place the satellite radio network's 22 million subscribers can turn to for a free-form discussion of ideas and topics, from current events and politics to hot-button issues like abortion and evolution.

"I want people to think twice," Judd said in a phone interview. "That's why I came up with the title, because in today's culture, in this ADHD culture, people don't understand the real important stuff. I want people to be talking about this stuff at the water cooler, around the kitchen table. I may have a total brainiac on who's one of the most important people in the world, but I want to translate it for standard-issue folks because that's where my heart is. I want to tell them how this is affecting their everyday life."

First up, though, the 66-year-old Grammy winner will examine her own life and her relationship with daughter Ashley Judd. Mother and daughter will sit down together in front of a studio audience next Tuesday to tape the debut episode.

Judd's voice filled with emotion when she described her feelings about the interview. She said that though the two have spent time together since Ashley Judd published a memoir last year that placed stress on their relationship, they have not spoken about the book or the revelations that Ashley was sexually abused as a child, including by a family member.

When "All That is Bitter & Sweet" was published last year, Ashley Judd said she'd never told her mother of the abuse. Both Naomi Judd and her other daughter, duo partner Wynonna Judd, say they also suffered sexual abuse.

"I admit I'm a little nervous about doing it because this is the first time that Ashley and I have ever done anything together," Judd said. "And I'm going to ask her about what happened in our relationship ? whoa, I have to take a deep breath before that one."

Judd said she would also ask her daughter about her feelings over the recent cancellation of her television series "Missing" and her emotions watching her husband, three-time Indy 500 champion Dario Franchitti race in the aftermath of the death of his close friend Dan Wheldon.

"I know she'll want to talk about her severe depression and share some ways that have gotten her to such a happy, stable place," Judd said. "But I think really it's probably going to be about our relationship because there's some ... Oh, boy."

Judd says she has now read "Bitter & Sweet." In the end, she said she felt it was her duty as a parent to read the book. Now she thinks the things she learned during the process can be instructive for parents who are dealing with similarly difficult issues.

"I had to take a deep breath before I opened the book and I read it by myself when I was in a good mood and had space and time," Judd said. "I knew I would probably be hollering out loud at certain things ? 'It didn't happen that way! I was there!' ? but (I was) acknowledging that anyone in a relationship has a completely different reality, and I wanted to know what my daughter's personal experiences and journeys were."

The remainder of the season will be live call-in shows that will be replayed Saturday morning. She's pulling her guest list from her personal rolodex, which is full of Nobel Prize winners and leaders in the science, medical and technology fields, deep thinkers and interesting people.

Guests already scheduled include National Institutes of Health Director Dr. Francis S. Collins and Dr. Helen Morrison, a forensic psychiatrist specializing in serial killers. And there's a handful of physicists she'd love to quiz.

Yes, physicists.

"I don't take vacations," Judd said. "I love the ocean, but I'm just not one to lie on the beach. So for three days I went up to Princeton for a seminar on quantum physics."

It's that sort of insatiable curiosity she wants to share with her listeners.

"I hope to blow away stereotypes," she said. "I'm not just a big-haired redhead country singer who dresses flamboyantly, has this wicked sense of humor and wears rhinestones. They have no idea about my underground secret life for 20 years."
